What is wrong with my transmission/gears?
I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier and recently I've noticed something a little different. When in reverse, and only in reverse, I'll have it in gear and give it some gas. The truck starts moving. Then its as if it slips, and the truck is no longer being pushed backwards even though I'm giving it gas. Then it's as if it catches again and then continues moving the truck. It only happens for a second, but this is not something it's ever done in the past 5 years I've had it. Any ideas?
tranny is slipping. bring it to a trustworthy mechanic.
when was the last time you had the tranny fluid replaced and put a new tranny filter? its part of the vehicles maintenance process.

What is planetary gears in a transmission on a 91 geo prizm??
Thought that my front axle was going out and the mechanic said that is was the planetary gears going bad, what are they and what are the signs, and is it chearper to buy whole transmission or what?
Planetary gears consist of 3 different main components. They have the ring gear which goes around the outside and is a big circle and then the center gear is called the sun gear located directly in the middle of the ring gear but quite a bit smaller. Then, in between the ring gear and the sun gear are usually 4 planet gears. It's called planetary gears because as the shaft spins the sun gear in the middle, the 4 planet gears rotate around it causing the ring gear to turn and as a result, whatever the ring gear is attatched to also will then turn. The signs would probably be noticeable by looking at them. The teeth may be wearing down or you may have cavitation issues. In a 17 year old car, it's not uncommon for the teeth on your gears to become very worn and as a result, yes it would be simpler and cheaper to just get a new transmission. The amount of money you would spend on labor alone to replace the gears would make it not worth it. Ask your mechanic though, he may give you a good quote. Also, get a second opinion to make sure it is the Gear Set thats going bad. Hope this helps!
